What Is Deprescribing?

Deprescribing is the process by which harmful medications are either significantly reduced in dosage and/or frequency or discontinued altogether in many cases.

Deprescribing is done under the care and supervision of a clinical pharmacist and is often referred to as “good prescribing” because deprescribing ensures that polypharmacy (overuse of prescription drugs) is avoided, which considerably improves health outcomes for patients. Our pharmacist is certified as a Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC). A BHC specializes in assisting patients with habits, behaviors, stress, worry, or emotional concerns that may be affecting daily life or health. Working closely with your primary care provider, the BHC pharmacist evaluates the mind-body-behavior connection and offers brief, solutions-focused interventions tailored to your specific needs.

The BHC has specialized training in behavioral management and collaborates with your primary care provider to address the physical, behavioral, and emotional aspects of your health concerns. Together, they work to determine the most effective course of action for your overall well-being.

In addition to BHC services, our pharmacist is also a certified Lifestyle Medicine Clinician through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. This specialty focuses on using therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary treatment for chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.

Our certified Lifestyle Medicine Clinician Pharmacist apply evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle changes to treat and, in many cases, reverse chronic conditions. These interventions are based on the six pillars of lifestyle medicine:

  • A whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern
  • Physical activity
  • Restorative sleep
  • Stress management
  • Avoidance of risky substances
  • Positive social connections

This approach is not only effective for treating chronic conditions but also serves as a powerful preventative measure.
